System Requirements
Creatures was released in 1996. The system specifications for Creatures (also called Creatures 1 or Original Creatures) are as follows:
Windows 95/98/ME NT 4.0 (SP 3) and Win 2000 / XP with administrator privileges
Pentium 166 or faster
4 X CD ROM or faster
16-bit Sound Card
2MB 16-Bit color SVGA display adapter (800X600 resolution minimum)
16 MB RAM (32MB recommended)
300MB of free hard disk space
(Both the graphics and sound cards require DirectX 5+ compatible drivers)
XP Compatibility: Creatures2 was not made to work on the Windows XP operating system. Though similiar, this operating system is different from Windows 95/98/ME and thus it may be unstable or refuse to work at all. However, some users have reported that things work fine as long as:The game / addon is installed by a user with complete administrator privileges. The game / addon is run only by a user with complete administrator privileges. So make sure that this is the case. You must install (or reinstall if already installed) under a Windows XP user that has complete administrator privileges. Also, the game can only run (be played) by a user with the same privileges - ie, complete administrator privileges.
When trying to install Creatures2 without using compatibility modes, you may receive the following error: "ISDX_ERR_BADWINDOWSVERSION - entry not found in string table." This problem is best solved as follows: 1.) Right click the Setup.exe program and select the compatibility tab. 2.) Check run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows NT 4.0 Service pack 5 (This compatibility option works best. 3.) click OK. 4.) Right click on the Setup.exe file and click "Run As:" Then check "The following user" and set the user option to "administrator" 5.) You must now provide the administrator password.
Some players have reported the following error when trying to run Creatures2 on Windows XP: "[DDERROR - NODIRECTDRAWHW] has been detected when attempting to draw game sprites." This error is due to the Video card not having an XP driver that supports direct draw emulation. Creatures 2, and DirectX want to use the Hardware acceleration in C2 rather than software acceleration. Windows XP is an NT based operating system, and does not support directly accessing the hardware. Therefore, for players who receive this error, there is little that can be done to fix the problem. I suggest that anyone wanting to upgrade to XP check with their video card manufacturer to see if the drivers for XP support Direct Draw from the hardware, or if they are for display only.
When installing Creatures and it’s associated updates and utilities, you should always update in the proper order. Installing out of order can cause innumerable problems with the game, and in the end frustrate you more than is necessary. The first step in any Creatures installation is to install from your creatures Disks/CD. Next start the game, and click Help, and then about. Take note of the revision number that you are shown. Your installation of updates should begin with the next available update after yours.

Executable Update
Description: Updates your Creatures 2 to version 1.0.38 and addresses the following issues:
- Word List is no longer fixed in the program and can be changed manually
- Problems with some kits appearing in German have been addressed
- New World file allows learning computers to take advantage of the above
- This update also addresses earlier issues:
- Full screen mode now correctly updates the creature list. Some users who made extensive use of full screen mode noticed that pressing TAB to cycle between Norns did not include creatures that had just hatched
- Sex of naturally laid eggs is now calculated from Norns only. Because Ettins and Grendels are male, this could fool the program into hatching an unusually high number of female Norns - this is now fixed
- Some masters produced post build 27 (North American build) such as French, German and English already have the below fixed:
- ENHANCEMENT: Macro language error messages improved
- BUG: Mouse pointer does not correctly appear in Creature's Eye View at the world wraparound point. Fixed
- BUG: Creatures had some problems at the world wraparound point. Fixed.
- ENHANCEMENT: Toolbar Labels option setting now persistent
- BUG: Screen scrolling in the room at the bottom left (where the chemical mixing machine is) causes camera judder. Fixed
Instructions: You must have a ZIP program to uncompress the file.
- Download the zipped archive
- Make sure that Creatures 2 is not running
- Double click on the downloaded file to unzip to a temporary folder
- Double-Click the setup file to start installation

Another benefit is that it will also allow you to run worlds with new backgrounds making it easier to run new 3rd party game worlds.
Instructions: - Download the self-extracting archive (your desktop is a good place to download to)
- Ensure that the Creatures 2 is not running.
- Double click on the downloaded file to start the installation.
- When you next launch Creatures 2, you will see the World Switcher, click on World.sfc to play your standard game or Create a new game from the world switcher menu.
Genome Update Version 54
Please note that this Genome is provided only so you can see the progression of Genetics for C2 if you so choose, and it is not the recommended update. The recommended update is Creatures 2 Genome Update version 56.
Description: Revision Notes
This update will upgrade your Creatures 2 Digital DNA to Genome 54 (please note that if you have Creatures 2 version 1.038 or above, you do not need this update). The Norns supplied in this pack are designed to be more robust in general as well as have improved behavior. Many minor tweaks have been made, and for the technically minded and those interested in the details of what we've updated, the major changes are detailed below:
Creatures Digital DNA
The structure of your Norns, Grendels and Ettins is based on Digital DNA™ -- a genetic structure that describes the building blocks of the creatures themselves, including their biochemistries, brain lobes, instincts and the poses they can get their bodies into. The below list describes the changes we've made since the original release of Creatures 2. If you'd like to learn more about why these changes were made, click here to read the Creatures 2 Genome Pack FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).
Some drives have been given priority over others, so that the primary drives (eating and reproducing) which keep the species alive, are given priority over secondary drives (eg NFP, boredom) in dictating the activity of a Norn
Norns now require a larger amount of food in their stomachs to feel full
The problem with causing damage to the uterus instead of to the heart when Norns become obese has been fixed. They also need to be a lot more obese now before any damage will be caused
The feeling of fullness depletes hunger. Fullness now depletes less hunger than before, so if the Norn snacks it will not necessarily totally deplete its hungry feeling, just slightly reduce it
Norns get more nutrition from eating now. This means that the rate at which they eat should better satisfy their energy requirements
A new regulation mechanism ensures that glycolysis only burns glucose when the Norn is low on ATP
Anaerobic respiration has been made more biologically realistic (many thanks are extended to Lis Morris for her contributions to this)
The feelings of crowdedness and loneliness wear off faster than before
Various stimuli have been changed to bring the amounts of punishment and reward more in line with the rest of the stimuli. This means that the stimuli should now contribute about equally to the learning process
Norns have a couple of new instincts to encourage them to do be more active when they're bored
Muscle tissue/protein use balance has been adjusted. This should increase a creature's life span
In addition to the above changes, the bloodstream now has an oxygen-carrying capability, to allow the Norn a few more seconds of life underwater. Many thanks are extended to Lis Morris for providing us with the genes for this.

Object Pack 1
Description: With brand new COBs:
Electric Gate This can be used to prevent Norns from going places that they shouldn't! Can be set to allow Norns through one-way, or not allow them from any side. Great for placing next to cliffs, or for locking Norns in rooms for wolfing runs!
Puffer Fish This cute little fish swims towards drowning Norns, inflates, and drags them up to the surface -- keeping them full of Oxygen all the way! Whilst not always successful, they're a useful addition to the ocean.
Pop Rocket A harmless little firework for Albia. Make sure there is plenty of room before using it!
Death Update script Some users may have noticed that their Ettins sometimes stay lying around after they have passed away. This update should resolve this issue.
German language in the game. Users in North America may have experienced a sprinkling of German scattered around their Agent Injector after downloading the Object Pack. This is not part of CyberLife's ongoing education program, and you won't find it in Japanese on a German machine! The reason for this was a confusion with Windows that led to the program deciding that United Kingdom English was not United States English, and that the closet language was German... Funnily enough, this problem does not occur the other way around. Needless to say, we've fixed it, so those not familiar with the German language will not need a dictionary to operate the Agent Injector.
This is a fixed version of this pack, and many apologies for the problem. If you've already downloaded the pack and your agent injector works correctly in English (United Kingdom customers), you do not need to download this fixed version.

A whole new personality: more aggressive, but also liable to become very afraid and run away when slapped. Basically, a typical bully, and a coward at heart
A new 'dancing' gait
Easily made breedable
